Paralegal Technology Glossary
I am Yasmina and I study Paralegal Technology and it's my fourth semester. This glossary can help people in the same field as I am to remember some terms they might forget. I researched 15 words that are extremely important to know in this field of study. I hope it could help some people.
- case law
- noun
- The law as established by the outcome of former cases.
- Example: Thus, Lord Steyn and the majority conclude that Article 8(1) is not engaged let alone contravened by Article 64(1A) of PACE, a conclusion even supported by Strasbourg case law.

- Claim
- verb
- State or assert that something is the case, typically without providing evidence or proof.
- Example: It would be wrong for Mrs Hurst to claim a share greater than 50% since she had stated in the agreement to the creditors that her husband and she had equal beneficial interest.

- noun
- A written or spoken agreement, especially one concerning employment, sales, or tenancy, that is intended to be enforceable by law.
- Example: There is a need to contract with the bank about securities to the loan, which will again require extra efforts and result in costs incurred by the lawyers of Allisgood plc.

- A court is a place where legal matters are decided by a judge and jury or by a magistrate
- Example: The judge felt his authority was restricted to committals for contempts made in the face of the court.

- noun
- A system of law concerned with the punishment of those who commit crimes.
- Example: The criminal law stigmatizes the gravest crime by the gravest punishment.

- noun
- A rule or principle or the law established through the repeated application of legal precedents.
- Example: This case mainly deals with the doctrine of constructive trusts.

- noun
- An election is a way people can choose their candidate or their preferences in a representative democracy or other form of government.
- Example: The liberals point to the election results following the October Revolution as proof of a lack of support for the Bolsheviks.

- something that is not according to or authorized by law.
- Example: Stealing is illegal.

- noun
- A public official appointed to decide cases in a court of law.
- Example: The judge felt his authority was restricted to committals

- noun
- The system of rules which a particular country or community recognizes as regulating the actions of its members and which it may enforce by the imposition of penalties.
- Example: A reversal of the current relationship between Legislature and Executive is also commended by proposing that the Executive must be placed under the power of a democratically renewed Parliament and all agencies of the state under the rule of law.

- noun
- A lawsuit is a proceeding by a party or parties against another in the civil court of law
- Example: Although slaves are protected in these ways according to the law, they themselves cannot file a lawsuit and so they rely on others who are free.

- A lawyer is a professional who is qualified to offer advice about the law or represent someone in legal matters.
- Example: The victim by contrast, no lawyer to represent her interests.

- Example: The future for battery farming is very uncertain as legislation changes.

- noun
- A person authorized to perform certain legal formalities, especially to draw up or certify contracts, deeds, and other documents for use in other jurisdictions.
- Example: While certifying the signature on the document, notary must see identification.

- noun
- A solemn promise, often invoking a divine witness, regarding one's future action or behavior.
- Example: We can't lie under oath.
